How to Use Duple Backup to Achieve Remote Backup Between Two TNAS Devices?

Applicable Versions: TOS 5.1, TOS 6.0, TOS 7.0

Applicable Models: All TNAS models

Duple Backup is a disaster recovery tool designed to enhance the data security of TNAS devices, featuring professional backup and restore functions. To prevent data loss caused by hardware failure or system failure on TNAS devices, Duple Backup provides an intuitive user interface that allows you to back up important folders or iSCSI LUNs from TNAS to multiple destinations (such as remote TNAS devices, file servers, cloud drives, etc.), and supports multiple backup strategies such as incremental backup and multi-version backup. The backup and restore process is simple and intuitive. When a device fails, lost data can be restored quickly.

I. Important Notes

  • Roles cannot be exchanged: The source TNAS must install DupleBackup, and the target TNAS must install DupleBackupVault. The roles of both ends are fixed and cannot be confused.

  • Only one-way backup is supported: Data only flows from the source to the target, and two-way synchronization cannot be achieved at the same time.

  • Do not modify data on the target side: Do not manually modify or delete backup directories managed by DupleBackup Vault, otherwise backup version records may be damaged and restore functions may be affected.

  • Recommendation for the first backup: The initial full backup may involve a large amount of data. It is recommended to perform it during off-peak network hours to avoid affecting daily use.

II. Preparation

  • Both TNAS devices are properly connected to the network and can normally access the TOS management interface.

  • The source TNAS has installed and enabled DupleBackup in the TOS App Center.

  • The target TNAS has installed and enabled DupleBackup Vault in the TOS App Center.

  • You know the IP address of the target TNAS (LAN scenario) or public IP / domain name (cross-network scenario), as well as an account and password with backup permissions.

III. Operation Steps

(I) Within the Same Local Network

When the two TNAS devices are on the same local network, no port forwarding is required. You can connect directly through the local IP address.

Step 1: Enable the Target Service

Log in to the target TNAS, open DupleBackup Vault, confirm that its status is "Running", and record the LAN IP of the target TNAS (can be viewed in "Control Panel >> Network").

Step 2: Create a Backup Task on the Source TNAS

  1. Open DupleBackup and click "Create Backup Task".

  2. Select the shared folder or iSCSI LUN to be backed up, configure the backup mode (Hybrid Mode recommended), select "Remote TNAS Task", and fill in the connection information:

    • Server Address: LAN IP of the target TNAS (for example 192.168.1.100)

    • Port: 7922

    • Username / Password: Account and password of the target TNAS

  3. Click "Next" and confirm that the connection is successful.

Step 3: Configure and Start the Task

Specify the target storage location, configure the schedule, save it, then manually run it once to confirm that the task executes normally.

(II) Cross-Network (Public Network) Remote Backup

When the two TNAS devices are located in different networks, you need to configure port forwarding on the target router first, then create the backup task.

Step 1: Obtain the Public IP or Domain Name of the Target Side

Check the public IP in the router where the target TNAS is located. If the public IP is dynamically assigned, it is recommended to enable DDNS in the TOS Control Panel and bind a fixed domain name to avoid connection interruption caused by IP changes.

Step 2: Configure Port Forwarding

Add a forwarding rule on the router where the target TNAS is located. The specific configuration is as follows:

Configuration ItemValue
External Port7922
Internal IPLAN IP of the target TNAS
Internal Port7922
ProtocolTCP

After saving the rule, you can verify whether port 7922 has been successfully opened through tools such as portchecker.co.

Step 3: Create a Backup Task

The process is the same as the LAN method. You only need to enter the public IP or DDNS domain name of the target TNAS in the connection information, keep the port as 7922, and complete the task configuration after the connection test passes.

Unable to Connect to the Target TNAS

  1. Confirm the server is running properly: Log in to the target TNAS and check whether DupleBackup Vault is installed and its status is "Running". If not started, enable it manually.

  2. Verify connection information: Carefully check whether the IP / domain name, port number (default 7922), account, and password are entered correctly. Pay attention to uppercase and lowercase letters.

  3. Check port forwarding (public network scenario): Confirm that the router port forwarding rule is configured correctly and the firewall allows inbound traffic on port 7922. If there are multiple devices under the same public IP, ensure the internal IP correctly points to the target TNAS.

  4. Test network connectivity: You can run the command telnet [Target IP] 7922 on the source TNAS terminal to determine whether the target port is reachable.

Connection Successful but Backup Task Failed

  • Check whether the target TNAS has sufficient remaining storage space to hold the backup data.

  • Confirm that the storage volume status of the target TNAS is normal (not degraded or damaged).

  • Check the DupleBackup task logs and locate the root cause according to the specific error messages.

Slow Backup Speed over Public Network

The first full backup usually contains a large amount of data, so slower speed is normal. It is recommended to perform it during off-peak hours such as nighttime. Subsequent backups using incremental or hybrid mode only transfer changed data, and the required time will be greatly reduced.

V. After-Sales Feedback

If the problem is still not resolved after the above troubleshooting, please submit after-sales feedback according to the following steps:

  1. Open the TOS desktop, go to Technical Support >> Feedback, generate and save the system diagnostic report.

  2. Export the application operation logs in DupleBackup.

  3. Send the system diagnostic report together with the application operation logs to the official support email: support@terra-master.com.
