Media Indexing

The indexing service scans files (photos, videos, audio, documents) within the specified directory and generates index data. After indexing, applications such as Photos, Multimedia Server, TNAS mobile, and iTunes Server can easily access and utilize these media contents.

How to configure the indexing service?

  1. Go to 【Control Panel】>【Indexing Service】 and select "Enable Media Indexing."
  2. Add an indexing directory and choose the index type (photos, videos, audio, and documents).
  3. Click "Apply" to start indexing.

How the indexing service works

  • The system automatically detects changes (addition, modification, deletion) to files in the index library and dynamically updates the index data.
  • Once indexing is complete, thumbnails are automatically generated for photos and videos in the index library.
  • Rebuilding the index will clear the existing database and create a new one.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the indexing speed slow?

Cause: The indexing directory contains a large number of files, or the system is running other high-resource-consuming processes.
Recommendation: Try configuring the indexing path in batches, or schedule indexing tasks during system idle periods.

Are the indexed files incomplete?

Cause: The indexing directory contains a large number of files, or the system is running other high-resource-consuming processes.
Recommendation: Try configuring the indexing path in batches, or schedule indexing tasks during system idle periods.

Failed to enable media indexing?

Cause: Certain special operations may have resulted in the loss of the media indexing configuration file.
Recommendation: Restart the device first. If the issue persists after restarting, please contact customer support to arrange remote assistance by a technician.

Why is a Photos folder automatically added to the index library?

Cause: After installing the Photos application, the system automatically creates two folders:

  • The Photos shared folder (corresponding to the "Public Space" in the Photos application).
  • The Photos folder under homes > username (corresponding to the "Private Space" in the Photos application).

Recommendation: This is a normal phenomenon. You may use the Photos folder as a media storage directory to better manage your media files.

Note

The media indexing process consumes certain system resources, which may temporarily affect device performance during indexing. We recommend performing this operation during periods of low device load to minimize its impact on the user experience.
