Duple Backup

Duple Backup is a disaster recovery tool designed to enhance data security for TNAS devices, featuring both backup and restoration functions. To prevent data loss due to hardware or system failures on TNAS devices, Duple Backup's intuitive user interface allows you to back up important folders or iSCSI LUNs from TNAS to multiple destinations (such as remote TNAS devices, file servers, or cloud storage). It supports multiple backup strategies including incremental backup and multi-version backup, making the backup and restoration process simple and intuitive. In case of device failures, lost data can be quickly restored.

Application Components

  • Duple Backup: Client application installed on the TNAS device where data needs to be backed up.
  • Duple Backup Vault: Server-side application installed on the TNAS device where backup data is stored.
Note

If you choose to back up to a remote TNAS device, the remote TNAS device needs to have Duple Backup Vault installed beforehand. Other destination types do not require installation.

Backup

You can manage backup tasks and task versions in Duple Backup in this section.

Managing Tasks

Use the functional bar at the top right of the Duple Backup homepage to perform the following operations.

  1. Search: Search for existing tasks based on keywords.
  2. Create: Create a new task.
  3. Edit: Edit the selected task.
  4. Run/Stop: Start/stop the selected task.
  5. Delete: Delete the selected task.
  6. Integrity Check: Perform an integrity check on the selected task's backup data to verify if the backup is executable and if the backup data can be successfully restored.
  7. Backup Versions: View the creation time, completion time, and status of backup versions for the selected task. You can also view backup version information, delete or lock specific versions.

How to Create a Backup Task

  1. Click the "Create" Icon: In the upper right corner of the interface.
  2. Select the Backup Target:
Volume: Perform a full backup of all shared folders under a single volume in the TNAS device.
Shared Folder: Back up a specified shared folder in the TNAS device.
iSCSI LUN: Back up a specified iSCSI LUN in the TNAS device.
  3. Select the Backup Mode.
  4. Select the Backup Destination:
TNAS: Local TNAS device, remote TNAS device.
File Server: rsync server, WebDAV server.
Cloud Storage: Alibaba Cloud OSS, Amazon S3, BackBlaze B2, Baidu Netdisk, Box, DropBox, Google Drive, Mega, OneDrive, OpenDrive, PCloud.
  5. Fill in the Destination Connection Credentials: Establish a connection between the TNAS and the destination.
Remote TNAS Device: IP address, port, username, password.
File Server: IP address, port, username, password.
Cloud Storage: Access Key/Secret Key, Key ID/Application key, username/password.
  6. Set the Task's General Information: Name, backup source, destination, subfolder.
  7. Set the Task Execution Schedule.
  8. Confirm the Settings: Click "Confirm" to complete the creation of the backup task.
Note
  1. For data backed up in hybrid mode, Duple Backup will encrypt the data stored at the destination. For incremental, mirror, and multi-version modes, the destination only stores the original data.

Hybrid Mode: Combines the advantages of multi-version and incremental modes, sharing the same backup data between versions, providing benefits such as small disk space requirements, fast backup speed, and convenient version management.

Incremental Mode: Only backs up modified files and new files since the last backup completion. Unchanged files do not need to be backed up repeatedly. Suitable for scenarios requiring fast backup and limited storage space.

Mirror Mode: Creates a complete copy of the backup source data at the destination, including all file and directory content, ensuring that the destination data is an exact mirror of the source data. Suitable for backup scenarios with high data integrity requirements.

Multi-Version Mode: Saves multiple versions of the source data during the backup process. Each backup is treated as an independent version, allowing you to select and restore to a specific state during data restoration. Suitable for scenarios emphasizing historical version control.

  2. The backup mode will filter out unsupported modes based on the "backup target" (e.g., iSCSI LUN only supports hybrid mode backup).

  3. The destination device will filter out unsupported types based on the corresponding "backup mode" (e.g., incremental mode only supports backup to TNAS or some cloud storage).

  4. When backing up to cloud storage, please note that each cloud storage provider has different restrictions on transfer speed and storage space. Refer to the requirements of the cloud storage service provider.

  5. When a scheduled task encounters a conflict, the current ongoing task will be prioritized, and the schedule will enter the next execution cycle.

  6. When a backup task version is locked, it is not counted in the version retention count and cannot be replaced or deleted.

How to Achieve Mutual Backup Between TNAS Devices in Different Networks

  1. Ensure that the TNAS requiring backup has successfully installed Duple Backup, and the target TNAS has installed Duple Backup Vault.
  2. Set up port forwarding on the router where the target TNAS is located.
  3. Enter the public IP address/domain name, username, and password of the target TNAS in the connection setup window and complete the backup task creation.

Restore

You can manage restore tasks in Duple Backup within this section.

  • Existing Backup Tasks: Restore data using existing backup tasks in Duple Backup.
  • Existing Data Files: Restore using a folder in the .duple format selected by Duple Backup.

Creating a Restore Task (Existing Backup Task)

  1. Click the "Create" icon in the upper right corner.
  2. Select the restore method.
  3. Set the task's general information - name, restore source, destination.
  4. Confirm the settings and click "Confirm" to complete the creation of the restore task.

Creating a Restore Task (Existing Backup Data)

  1. Click the "Create" icon in the upper right corner.
  2. Select the restore method.
  3. Select the restore target.
Folder: Restore a specified data folder.
iSCSI LUN: Restore a specified iSCSI LUN folder.
